Long Hair: How Old Is Too Old?
I’m a woman who typically wears her hair long, but with another birthday fast approaching in less than a week, I find myself wondering (yet again) if it may be time to go with a shorter style. I do see other women my age though – friends and coworkers, and even stars like Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox – who sport long tresses. Still, I have to ask: is there an age when long hair is no longer acceptable?
This past Saturday night I ran into a woman who wore her silver mane well below her shoulders. And then there’s my teenage daughter who is adorable (no bias intended) in a pixie cut. With as many different perspectives out there as there are cuts to choose from, I decided to ask around. What I heard most was that it only matters how you FEEL and how you LOOK. It’s not about age determining length; it’s about finding a maintainable, flattering style tailor-made for your face (and lifestyle). Some enjoy the shorter ‘dos, while others are happy with longer hair.
After getting mine cut at least a half-dozen times over the past few decades, I definitely feel more comfortable with locks I can throw up in a messy bun to clean the house or a sassy pony to work out at the gym. And, depending on my mood, I can go straight or kinky, side swept, pigtails or sophisticated updo. For me, the key is having choices.
That doesn’t mean I won’t try out a flirty bob someday but, for now, long hair suits me. And, quite honestly, it makes me feel younger and even a bit sexy. Who doesn’t want to feel like that?
