After Extreme Weight Loss
Whether it was 5 pounds of 150 pounds, weight loss is a victory for individuals. However, those with a recent massive weight loss face an unfortunate irony – while they worked so hard to improve their lives and lose weight, it’s met with deflated bodies and excessive skin. Chicago-based board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Geldner says body contouring procedures are an ideal solution for patients with extreme weight loss.
“After extreme weight loss, excess skin typically remains around a number of areas including the neck, upper arms, breasts, abdomen and thighs, which tends to make the body shape look irregular,” says Dr. Geldner. “While not all massive weight loss patients want or need extensive procedures to improve their bodies, many do for esthetic purposes, emotional well-being and physical reasons.”
Face and Neck Lift: Facial improvements for weight loss patients tend to involve the neck and lower face. These procedures may include raising the cheek pads, correcting jowls and removing loose and sagging skin around the face and neck. The incisions are placed in front of and behind the ears, making them practically invisible.
Arm Lifts: Also known as a brachioplasty, this procedure removes the excess skin and fat deposits on the upper arm that typically become loose and flabby. “Be cautious of where the arm lift is being performed as lifts from the armpit only are lousy. There will be a scar, but the only good price for a contour is a scar,” says Dr. Geldner.
Breast Lifts: Excessive weight loss often leads to lost volume and shape in the breasts. A breast lift will raise and firm the breasts, and some patients require implants to improve the shape and size.
Abdomen Lifts: The focus in abdominoplasty is geared to skin resection, and sometimes novel techniques are necessary to achieve the best results. The trade-off lies in scarring versus shape. Patients also often require body lifts on the backside or lower back area.
Thigh Lifts: This procedure is relatively uncommon, but a good option for severely afflicted thighs. Trade-offs must be carefully considered and many patients want all of their scars in the groin, but this approach has many problems. Skin resections that pass along the length of the leg are often preferable as they tighten the skin and have the most power effect on thigh shape.
