Late Summer Skincare Tips

This summer has been amazing! Filled with day trips, beach days, lounging on the lawn of your favorite park but now; your skin has taken a bit of a beating. Britta Aragon, founder of popular New York City based CV Skinlabs – (a new safe for sensitive skin, non toxic skincare line, with a focus on wellness) has some incredible skincare tips for restoring your skin after the summer sun and heat.

1. Calm redness and soothe flushed, summer skin!

I have very sensitive skin, so I like to use our CV Skinlabs Rescue + Relief powerhouse multitasker. I use it all the time—after a peel to calm and plump my skin, before I apply makeup, on the plane to hydrate my skin, and after I shave my legs or go through laser treatments. It’s also great after getting too much sun, to calm and soothe my skin. Since I travel to Miami  a lot, its a must have for itch from any insect bites, and I also use it after my 6-mile run in Central Park to calm down my flushed skin on my face. This anti-inflammatory elixir is made with 84% organic ingredients, and it calms and soothes the most irritated and sensitive of skins with aloe, water lily, chamomile and cucumber—and zero potentially harmful chemicals! Don’t be without this favorite this summer!

2. Get a summertime glow with a good night’s sleep!

Nothing makes my skin glow more than a good night’s sleep, but sometimes getting the sleep I need is easier said than done. I’ve learned to take advantage of aromatherapy. I underestimated its power until I tried Essence of Vali Sleep Ritual. I put a couple drops on the corner of my pillow and immediately felt the calming effects. Hello, dreamland! It has pure essential oils like lavender, marjoram, cedarwood and ylang-ylang. If I’m extra stressed out, I’ll make sure I take a bath before bed to prepare my body for rest. I love Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath. The warmth of certified organic mustard gently opens pores, assists in the elimination of impurities and balances your pH. The divine pure essentials oils of eucalyptus, rosemary and thyme make this the most restorative therapeutic bath out there!

3. Extend your self-tan and keep the glow on!

We all love that summer glow, right? I’m no different! But of course I’m not going to subject my skin to damaging UV rays or heaven forbid, tanning beds! Instead, I embark on a weekly self tanning ritual with organic Liberata’s  self tanning mousse in ‘medium’ and lotion in ‘warm’.  But we all know how quickly they can fade, right? I have a secret way you can extend the life of your glow! Aside from exfoliating your skin before you self-tan, I use the medium mousse for 1  night, follow up with the warm lotion for 2 nights in a row and then apply our CV Skinlabs Body Repair Lotion everyday after until I start the process again. You get double the benefits here—the lotion is extremely hydrating, so it will help keep your skin moist and healthy, which naturally helps it to hold onto the color. But you’ll also enjoy the most attractive, alluring and radiant sheen! This lotion naturally makes your skin look celebrity-smooth ( celeb makeup artist Julie Harris loves to use this on models skin on photo shoots) You have to try it to believe it!

4. Drink down a cooling, antioxidant-rich smoothie for clear skin.

I have a daily morning smoothie and I am addicted! Made up of whole foods, it’s so refreshing in the summer and full of antioxidants like vitamin A and C. My energy levels soar, my skin looks hydrated and clear, and the smoothie tastes delicious. It’s got only 10 ingredients: filtered water, ice, one-half of an organic banana, some frozen blueberries, 1 teaspoon cacao powder, 1 teaspoons spirulina, 1 teaspoon coconut oil, raw organic spinach, unsweetened almond milk and Sun Warrior Natural Vegan Protein powder.  This keeps me full until lunch and helps to cleanse my body on a daily basis.

5. Extend your shampoo and add volume without over-drying your locks.

Summer can take a toll on hair. We often wash it more often than we do in the winter, which can strip away natural oils, leaving hair dry, dull, and lifeless. If you want to add volume without overdrying, there are a couple things you can do. First, try dry shampoo. It’s easy, fast, and removes oil and grime without stripping your hair. Acure Organics has one that includes CoQ10, argan stem cells, and essential oils to boost moisture and shine while giving your hair a boost. You can also make your own dry shampoo! Wellness Mama has some neat recipes here: http://wellnessmama.com/5047/dry-shampoo/.

Next, make sure you’re using good products on your hair. Shampoos that are full of harsh chemicals and detergents that leave you with dull, dry strands (always avopid SLS in your shampoo) I use shampoos and conditioners both from Giovanni (obsessed with the Deep Moisture conditioner), Rahua and Intelligent Nutrients. I sleep in hair oil once per week and I don’t color my hair—just use a gloss twice per year. That has helped keep my hair strong. And I wash twice a week and use dry shampoo in between to lessen damage.

6. Choose the right sunscreen for you!

To protect against sunburn, photo-aging and skin cancer, sunscreen is a non-negotiable 365 days a year, while indoors or out!  Certain types of sunscreen can irritate skin, however, and if you’re especially sensitive, you need to choose wisely—and that means reading labels.

Physical (or mineral) sunscreens, which contain combinations of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, sit on top of skin, reflecting or scattering sunlight. Considered the safest options, they are the least likely of all sunscreen ingredients to cause skin reactions, while blocking the broadest spectrum of UV rays. The downside is they can be whitening and aesthetically unappealing, though today’s formulas have used smaller particles to reduce visibility.

On the other hand, hybrid and chemical formulations, containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, PABA, salicylates, and benzophenone, which are absorbed by the skin, and therefore wear invisibly, have been associated with a multitude of risks. Some studies have found they can encourage the formation of free radicals that can damage cells. Many are also hormone disruptors, mimicking hormones in the body, which can cause other health issues. And some are simply toxic to both people and the planet.

The bottom line: Choose sunscreens that boast “mineral,” “organic” or “chemical-free” formulations. I like Juice Beauty SPF 30 Tinted Moisturizer and MyChelle SPF 30.

7. Glamping? Heal cuts, insect bites and minor burns with first aid essential.

The warm weather can wreak havoc on the skin. Outdoor activities can lead to sunburn, allergies, bumps, scrapes and irritation. If you’re prone to any of these concerns (and who isn’t at one time or another?), try our award-winning CV Skinlabs Restorative Skin Balm. A cult favorite, it’s a safe, 100%-natural and non-toxic cure-all balm that helps heal anything from dry lips and parched skin to minor cuts and other wounds. Made with bio-compatible, natural and/or organic ingredients, plus an exclusive Tri-Rescue Complex—a proprietary blend of turmeric, bisabolol and reishi mushroom—this product provides powerful anti-inflammatory support to soothe and repair symptoms most commonly associated with compromised skin. If you’re suffering from redness, itching, dryness, damaged barrier function, fragility and irritation this summer, restore your skin to radiant health with Restorative Skin Balm.
