Multi-Step Skin Care

Asian women have been practicing multi-step skin care regimens for years, and Americans are finally starting to adopt the trend. While combining multiple serums, toners and moisturizers might seem over the top to some, dermatologists say it’s actually worth the few extra minutes each day: each product builds off the other, increasing each product’s efficacy and allowing the ingredients to target skin more effectively. Together, the right combination can fine-tune your complexion for blemish-free, hydrated, brightened and radiant skin, amping up results faster than you’d see using just one star product.

The key to perfecting a multifaceted regimen is knowing what to include, what to avoid, and the right tips for application.

  • Start light: As a rule of thumb, the thinnest products in a skin care regimen should go on first, as they deliver active ingredients the most efficiently and prep the skin for moisturizers. For dry skin, you can even use two serums -or layer a serum with a toner.
  • Add in antioxidants: Make sure the products are loaded with anti-oxidants like gingko nut and chamomile. Not only will it brighten your skin, but hydrate, calm and clarify it for a holistic complexion boost.
  • Moisturize: Use moisturizers after serums as it will seal the serum onto your skin, making the ingredients more effective and penetrate the skin deeper.
  • Retinol: Using a cream or lotion at night with heavier retinol content will make you look a whole lot younger. It will reduce fine lines and wrinkles and overtime restore skin to a healthy balance.
