Red Carpet Tips

Dr. Gene Rubinstein, celebrity dermatologist, reveals his star regimen for red carpet-ready skin. Red carpet may also mean your family holiday events, the 20 year high school reunion, or just looking your very best anytime.

Dr. Rubinstein’s Tips for Red Carpet-Ready Skin

What is red carpet-ready skin? Red carpet events often start in the daylight and outdoors and continue indoors, well into the night. So the skin must be well-prepared to continue looking radiant. This is best achieved by starting three months before your event, or taking care of your skin on an ongoing basis. According to Dr. Rubinstein, “Healthy, well hydrated, blemish-free skin will look great with minimal makeup, and that is always our goal. Makeup should be used to enhance features and beautify the skin, not to cover up imperfections.” Dr. Rubinstein also recommends looking as natural as possible. “Aging is inevitable, but we can look great at any age. Softening lines, replenishing lost volume and reversing sun damage is the best way to look naturally youthful.”

Red Carpet Tip #1 - Look Well Rested

Replenish lost volume in the midface to look well rested. Dr. Rubinstein uses Restylane to fill in the tear troughs and reduce the appearance of under eye bags. He uses Radiesse to replenish the volume in the cheeks and midface. “A little goes a long way,” says Dr. Rubinstein, who opts for a natural appearance with small amounts of strategic injections.

Red Carpet Tip #2 - Look Radiant

Well-hydrated skin will look radiant and will hold makeup best. A light chemical peel one month before your event helps remove the outermost dead layers of the skin. Two weeks before the event, and then again one day before the event, an oxygen or collagen treatment helps hydrate the skin. Many options are available from numerous spas and aestheticians. Dr. Rubinstein and his aestheticians treat many celebrities in preparation for on-camera events and have found Intraceuticals Oxygen/Hyaluronic Acid Treatment and Collagen Facial Mask treatments to be best for hydrating and temporarily tightening the skin. “I recommend a series of treatments that start at least six weeks before an event. This gives us time to treat and reverse accumulated damage in the skin, tighten pores and hydrate with treatments and at-home products.” Dr. Rubinstein asks his patients to keep their skin healthy, and to avoid waiting for a big event, expecting one treatment to do all the work. “It’s a comprehensive approach and ongoing maintenance produces long-lasting results.”

Red Carpet Tip #3 - Eyelashes Are the New Lips
Eyelashes have become the new sign of youth and beauty. With products such as Latisse®, created by the makers of Botox®, rejuvenating the eyes is easier then ever. Latisse takes 4 to 8 weeks to see the results. Eyelash extensions and natural looking “fake” ones will also do in a pinch. Dr. Rubinstein recommends regular use of Latisse to help your eyes look more youthful with less makeup for every day.

Red Carpet Tip #4 - Blemish-Free Skin
If you have some time before an event, a photofacial or CO2 fractional resurfacing with Active FX helps clear up brown spots, sun-damaged skin and redness. “Today, we have a complete laser toolbox which offers great options for our patients. I use multiple modalities to clear the skin, tighten and tone the skin, and soften wrinkles. We don’t rely on one treatment to do it all.” Today’s minimally invasive lasers have superior results with minimal downtime.

Red Carpet Tip #5 - Less Is More
Too much makeup in an attempt to cover up imperfections makes a person look older. Foundation should look moist, not mat or cakey. Dr. Rubinstein recommends distracting the eye from imperfections by highlighting a feature of the face that is most attractive. The older the person, the less color should be worn on the skin.

EARLY LIFE

The first time he appeared in a national publication, he was a 16 year old participant of the only program in the United States which made cadaver dissection available for young teens.  The son of Russian Jewish immigrants, was in a lead story in People Magazine in June of 1981.  Building on his early love for human anatomy, Gene continued his studies earning a BS in Biology at UCLA and spent his college years conducting clinical research at the Veterans Administration facilities in Los Angeles.   Supporting himself through college, the future physician furthered his education with an MBA from Pepperdine University, Malibu, while working full time in the medical device industry.

EDUCATION

This young man was looking for adventure which lead him to spend a year at the Technion University in Haifa, Israel.  “This was an exceptional experience and a rare opportunity to see the world through the eyes of the local population” states Dr. Rubinstein, recalling his time in a military hospital on the border with Lebanon.  His diverse experience and scholastic achievements earned him acceptance at one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country, Boston University Medical School, where he earned his Medical Doctorate.

Early in his medical education, Gene decided that he will pursue the field of dermatology.  Boston is known as a research town and houses the most admired dermatological laser facility in the world at the Massachusetts General Hospital as part of Harvard Medical School.  Gene approached the program and was quickly accepted based on his extensive research experience at UCLA.  He spent the next year studying lasers in dermatology and photomedicine under R. Rox Anderson, MD, a physician/physicist and a pioneer in lasers for skin applications.

FAMILY LIFE

His wife, Rita, joined Gene on his medical school path and helped support the young couple utilizing her business and marketing education.  Rita ran clinical trials and marketing projects for the dermatologic laser industry and worked on major projects which helped bring IPL, laser hair removal and other laser applications to the market.

“When our kids were born, Rachel (12) and Julian (8), we settled close to our parents, our lives had to settle and so did we.  We had a great adventure traveling the world and it came to a wonderful plateau in beautiful Sherman Oaks” jokes Dr. Rubinstein.  “Now we have a tortoise and a pug and life is very full.”

RESIDENCY

Californians at heart, the young couple decided to move back to the West Coast.  Gene attained his medical internship at Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles and his Dermatology Residency at UC, Irvine.  “UCI was a top notch residency” states the accomplished dermatologist “I have been lucky in my medical training to have been part of programs that offered hands-on training which teaches you so much more than a classroom ever can.  We did everything from minor surgery to extensive reconstructions, invaluable training in a high tech environment of a government hospital.”

THE PRACTICE

He opened his first dermatology practice in Encino, CA, with a partner he met in residency training.  Soon thereafter, as the practice grew, Dr. Rubinstein relocated his budding practice to Studio City.  “Studio City is a great place.  I treat a lot of entertainment industry patients which come from all over the country.  I enjoy meeting such a diverse crowd in such a suburban local.”  His practice has a great mix of cosmetic dermatology with dermatologic surgery, medical dermatology, and skin cancer prevention and treatment.  He is always on the forefront of new developments in dermatology and is often approached by laser companies to conduct research and training for young physicians.

ACADEMICS

Dr. Rubinstein always enjoyed learning and now enjoys teaching.  In his faculty appointment as Clinical Instructor of Dermatology at the UCLA, he teaches Medical and Dermatology Residents.

DERMATOLOGIST TO THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

Situated in the heart of Studio City, Dr. Rubinstein prides himself on keeping his entertainment industry clientele looking high-definition ready.  “To accommodate our patients’ demanding work and travel lifestyles, we customize treatments to accomplish the best results with the shortest downtimes and a natural looking appearance“.  Utilizing his laser background and research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Rubinstein continuously evaluates new and emerging technologies and carefully selects superior technology for his practice.   Dr. Rubinstein has been featured on PBS, KTLA, Extra, Style Network, In Style Magazine and numerous publications.  “My goal is to make you look like you, but younger and fresher with natural movement of the face.  My experience treating those on camera helps me achieve camera ready results for all my patients. ”
